About Us

The Balobi Group mission statement states:

“We want to run our business of fishing based on its involvement in the current sectors, in an orderly fashion to its maximum potential and profitability by reaching clearly defined targets, and thereby ensuring financial and job security for all involved.

We want to achieve this aim with happy motivated and disciplined staff, who find their work stimulating and challenging and are clear on what is expected of them, and confident that they can achieve what is expected of them with reasonable effort.”

Through direct and indirect involvement in the various fishing sectors, the Balobi Group provides employment to 325 crew, factory staff involved in processing of our products, maintenance staff, admin staff and management staff.

In this way it is estimated that the Balobi Group feeds at least 1,300 mouths in the economically poor Eastern Cape of South Africa and enables them to enjoy a higher standard of living.

The group also provides staff transport, school bursaries to those who qualify, and makes provision for staff loans.

In addition to this, two of our fishing companies have managed to build and provide low cost housing for our staff.

We work together with our fishing vessel partners to ensure standards are continually improved.

The Balobi group of fishing companies, has started certain initiatives to enlarge its social responsibility footprint in the local community. These projects are the following:

Disney Centre Crèche in the local impoverished community. The Balobi group of companies signed an agreement with the crèche in November 2012 whereby the group will donate monthly, with the purpose of feeding between 35 and 90 children daily and to contribute towards the payment of electricity and other amenities. In this way the group will be supplementing the efforts of the Department of Social Development who are providing funds for up to 35 children. However, this Crèche is often catering for up to 90 children and the additional funds provided by our group are essential for the efficient running costs of this facility.

The Balobi Group also recently spearheaded the formation of the Sea Vista Educational Trust (IT 234/2013), a Public Benefit Organisation with the purpose of providing educational assistance to HDP children of the local Sea Vista community. The beneficiaries are black children of Sea Vista who cannot afford to pay for their tuition. Therefore the trust will benefit youths in our community. This trust is managed by trustees appointed from the local community and also two trustees from the Balobi Group.

National Sea Rescue Institute NSRI:
As members of the fishing industry, we feel it is our responsibility to make a regular donation to this organization and in this way we are able to contribute towards the safety of our seas.

Scholarships:
The Company resolved to provide assistance to employees with dependents who excel academically via the Company Scholarship, which settles the educational fees of the dependents of employees who meet certain criteria.

Food Security
Staff is allowed to purchase any product from the Group at staff discounted prices if for his family’s own consumption.

Transport:

As Port St Francis is situated some distance from the local community, the applicant provides transport to get its employees to and from work.
